Today’s run: 2.9 miles, 29 minutes. YT: 62.8 miles. Back from NY. My brain was completely empty today. All I can remember is the feel of the rain on my face, the warmth of being overly dressed, and the moment where I could feel my body wake up.
Fact:Murakami smoked 60 cigarettes a day when he became a runner, and he did it first and foremost to become a better writer.
Why do you run, outside of obvious physical benefit?

The feeling of “waking up”… does it stay with you all day?
Lets me spend time outdoors, which I love, makes me feel strong, challenges me, and gives me joy (most of the time!).
Like Jeni, for the joy of it. And when joy doesn’t come, to keep the hope of it.
Aside from the physical benefits:
1. For the incredible feelling of freedom and well-being that results from a great run.
2. For the satisfaction and confidence gained from facing and overcoming the physical and mental challenges of running. The word “can’t” no longer exists.
3. To enjoy the outdoors.
4. To enjoy the running community. Runners are amazing people!
“Freedom!” That gets right at it. I’ve never found an activity that is simultaneously grounding AND exhilarating.
It’s funny – the community aspect has been a complete and wonderful surprise to me!
I love arriving at work knowing that I expended more raw energy before my co-workers woke up than they will all week. :)
• It gets me going and helps me feel better all day.
• Getting outside in the early quiet of the day.
• It’s something over which I have control
• When I run with others, just to enjoy the friendship
“Getting outside in the early quiet” is a big one for me, too. So glad to have a Kenyan commenter, Bob! Are you originally from there or there for work?
“Getting outside in the early quiet” is high on my list, too! I love running at sunrise!
I enjoy seeing other runners’ lists! You started an interesting thread with this post, Sara!
