Hawk Run

Today’s run: 4.52 miles, 54:24 minutes. YT: 787.07. The time is slow because I stopped so many times to take photographs. Perfect 48 degree temp for running today. Brilliant.

Maybe it’s because the year’s end is near, but I’ve been battling with the 5-year-old “I don’t wanna” version of myself on my last few runs. And so today, to get myself onto the wet streets, I turned the run into a photo expedition by giving myself the challenge of finding at least 10 good shots.

Consciously asking yourself to OPEN YOUR EYES to the world around you always yields something interesting. This morning, that something was….

The avian John Wayne of East River Park:

I’m not sure that you can tell, but that is a giant hawk perched on a fence, taking one for team New York by eating a GIANT RAT. That’s the first rat I’ve seen that was as big as the one in my apartment, so needless to say, HAWK, YOU F’N ROCK. Like John Wayne’s character in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, he’s the last bastion of a wild world, taking one for the team by eating giant rats while the rest of us go to Washington and launch political careers. Or something like that.

The rest of the photos from this a.m. are after the jump.

Today’s run: 8 miles, 1:26: 21 min., plus .7 miles cooldown. Felt great on this run. The pace is kind of amazing given how many times I slowed down to take pics. Those little sprint bursts I’ve been doing really help pick up the overall pace.

I wanted a run that would let me explore, so I decided to cross the island on Houston, which I had never done, then run around the tip of Manhattan and back up Houston to home.

I ran a few blocks down Stanton…

Then across Bowery and up to Houston. Houston toward the west side was much quieter than I anticipated. And look: I found Film Forum:

OK, yeah, you can’t really see it because I took the photo as an afterthought, too far away. But here’s what’s playing:

I may go tonight. We’ll see. Film Forum is just a block from the harbor. Ahhhh….

One of my favorite views - look at all those shapes and angles

Up Rivington, past my ratty old sublet

My much beloved corner cafe

Home!!
