Today’s run: 5.48 miles, 1:02:15 min. YT: 379.54. More speedwork today:  .5m RP, .75m RP, .5 mile SP, .25m x 2 SP, .1m x2 SP, with jogging between each interval, and warm up and  cool down too. I really, really had to fight to crank these out, and wasn’t as fast as I would have liked. I did scare quite a few squirrels. Hurrah.

Today was my first run in my new Nike Free Run+s. I had a pair of Frees years ago and loved them. Love these now too! And I love that kicky charcoal ‘n pink. Yay!!

What was funny about this run is that the new placement of my Nike Plus, now that I finally have a pair of Nikes built to accommodate it in the heel, meant that I got much more accurate mileage and paces from the device. For months I’ve had to take .1 mile off each mile of distance at the end of the run to make it accurate. (Too lazy to calibrate…)

I didn’t realize this shift until at least halfway through the run. Instead I thought that I was having the FREAKING SLOWEST RUN EVER because I felt like I was doing a pace that it would normally tell me was a 9:30. Instead it was telling me it was 10:30. So I gnashed my teeth and felt mortified by how much I was clearly beaten down by my move, by nights of light sleep, by mental anguish and constant go go go…

Hello, NO! This run was damn hard because I was constantly trying to go faster than I normally go. I’m just fine, people! Slow as ever, but no slower! :-) I gotta tell you, I’m a little proud of juggling work, running, moving, and goodbyes this week and last. Got a little Superwoman complex going. Don’t worry: I’m sure something’s coming to tamp it down.

Today’s run: 4.46 miles, 46:20 minutes. YT: 148.46. I hit Tompkins Square Park today, just about a half a mile from my apartment. Pictured here is a statue of a Sam Cox, “mail carrier’s friend.” I could Google this guy, but I’m going to give him his mystery. I saw at least four bulldogs getting walked around the park. Also: I finally have east and west straight in my head. Orientation is good.

I’m not sure how I did on my first attempt at dressing for the cold. At first I thought I overdressed, but after I sweat little, I started feeling a chill. I think my ideal costume for this weather would be a nice puffy vest. My arms felt overdressed after a point.

My only real irritation with running in the cold so far is that my nose runs! It’s much harder to feel hale and hardy when your nose is a drippy faucet. Need to remember to carry tissues.

In other news, I thought my run descriptions would be easier in NY – so much to see! But in fact they’re harder. A good salesman knows only to put four ties on the counter, because otherwise the customer gets confused. So it goes here.

Today’s run: 3.3 miles, 31 minutes. YT: 109.7 miles. “Some day a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.” Today I discovered something: I love running in the pouring rain! I was a little alarmed, though, when I looked down at my knees and saw they were…foaming. Yes. I guess my washing machine doesn’t get all the soap out of my spandex.

Dripping wet but rocking my new PI gear

It’s Friday so I’m just going to geek out and post goofy pics of me in my first ever Pearl Izumi product, this long-sleeved, white, waffled shirt. I got it on sale, half off. I absolutely LOVE IT. It’s  incredibly soft and has a pocket for keys!! Woot!!

And re my hat: Did you know today is national Wear Red Day, for heart health? I almost always run in this hat, but today I felt extra-special-heart-healthy doing it.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope my shoes dry out for tomorrow’s beach run.

Running Chic

Today’s run: 6 miles, 1:03 minutes. YT: 75.2 miles. GREAAAAAT RUN. I thought about work a lot on the first half, not because I’m stressed but because I’m excited. Second half was dominated by an interesting cast of characters, some familiar. Kundalini lady was out in her pink jump suit, flailing her head around, her own special ecstatic brand of davening. Intense bearded man crossed my path three times, and faster than me. Zing. Finally, I saw the two delicate black cats I often see, posed together. Not sure whether they are best friends or lovers. Maybe both.

A conversation I had last week with my coworker:

Me: I definitely think more men look at me from cars when I run wearing lipstick.

Craig: Yeah. They’re wondering why you’re wearing lipstick to go running.

Today’s run: 6.35 m, 1:10. YT: 12.65 m. 2 miles easy, 3x 10 min tempo runs, 1 mile easy. Lots of moms with big sunglasses and babies with closed eyes out today. I also saw a man standing in his yard talking into a stainless steel pot. I think he’s different than you and me.

Podrunner.com has a zillion free podcasts (make a donation!), mostly progressive and house music. I like to run with all kinds of music, but there’s nothing quite like electronic to pick me up and pull me through a long run.

Here are my top 5 faves of the moment, all about an hour long and between 135-155 bpm. The descriptions are Podrunner’s:

Strong – mind body heart beats
Easygoing – this one starts out a bit jazzy, moves on to a funky house vibe, and builds to a prog house finish to make your going a lot easier
Chants Meeting – a hypnotic, lulling workout mix that will zone you out and bring you back to earth hardly even aware of the calories you’ve burned
Paradox Alley – opposites at track
Breezy – An uplifting breath of fresh air that will move you along for nearly an hour
